Sunscreen Myths

Whatever the season, your skin is always exposed to light and UV radiation. Sunscreen is designed to protect your skin from the sun’s harmful UV rays. Some claims that are made about it can make people think twice about slathering it on.

Myth 1: Melanin-Rich Skin Doesn’t Need Sunscreen

Some people believe that melanin-rich skin does not need sunscreen. This is because melanin helps to diffuse UVB rays and may protect again sunburn. While darker skin does benefit from more sun protection, daily sunscreen is still essential. UVA damage is not blocked by melanin in the same way and can lead to premature ageing and skin cancers.

Myth 2: SPF 100 is Twice as Effective as SPF 50

Sunbathers might think they get twice as much protection from SPF 100 as SPF 50. This is another myth. The extra protection is in fact negligible. Higher SPF products tend to lull buyers into a false sense of security so they feel they can stay in the sun for longer. As long as sunscreen over SPF 30 is applied properly, and reapplied regularly, a higher SPF value makes little difference. Sunburn protection is adequate with a SPF 30 and up. Always be sure to apply and reapply.

Myth 3: Makeup with SPF is Enough Protection

Although most foundations contain SPF15, it is not enough to protect skin from damaging UV rays. Ultraviolet depletes skin of Vitamin A and essential nutrients. Always apply a high factor SPF underneath your makeup – and remember to reapply every couple of hours.

Myth 4: You Don’t Need Sunscreen Indoors

One of the biggest myths of all is that skin is protected when not in direct sunlight. Skin is always exposed to light, and UV light is always harmful to skin – regardless of the amount of exposure. Un-tinted glass in car windows or at home reduces transmission of UV radiation – but it doesn’t block it completely. You can still get burnt if you spend a long time exposed to a window when the UV is high. Burning can lead to skin cancer. So slather it on even if you’re indoors.
