The Role of Nutrition in Skincare

Diet is a key contributor to skin (and overall) health. Make sure your clients understand that nourishing their body with healthy food promotes better skin health. To maximise skin health with diet they should:

  • Minimise consumption of processed foods
  • Eat more whole foods
  • Include natural sources of antioxidants, vitamins and minerals

The most important nutrients for skin health are:

Vitamin A

This is essential for skin repair. It promotes cell turnover and helps to prevent signs of ageing. Sources include sweet potatoes, carrots, spinach and peppers.

Vitamin C

This potent antioxidant helps with collagen production. Collagen breaks down as we age and is important for skin’s elasticity. It also helps to protect from environmental stressors like pollution and UV rays. Good sources include citrus fruit, broccoli and tomatoes.

Vitamin E

This powerful antioxidant protects the skin from damage caused by free radicals. Include almonds, spinach and sunflower seeds.

Minerals: Zinc & Selenium

Zinc has wound healing properties and helps to regulate oil production. It can help to prevent acne and maintain clear skin. Good sources are pumpkin seeds and lentils.

Selenium offers protection against sun damage and reinforces the skin’s ability to fight natural stressors. Brazil nuts are the best source of selenium. Three per day should do it!

Fatty Acids: Omega-3

Essential fatty acids (especially Omega 3s) play a pivotal role in maintaining optimal hydration and reducing inflammation. Fatty fish like salmon combined with flaxseeds and walnuts are great sources to include.

Unbalanced Diet

Diet can trigger common skin conditions including acne and rosacea.  An unbalanced diet contributes to premature skin ageing. Too much sugar and processed foods can trigger inflammation, oxidative stress, and collagen damage. This can impact treatment results. As a therapist, you should educate your clients and encourage them to take a holistic approach to their skincare.

Nutrition in Skincare

Nutrition in skincare is a powerful tool. Mindful eating can make all the difference to skin health. Tell your clients to prioritise nutrient dense food to slow down the signs of ageing and achieve a glowing complexion from within.
