Papulopustular rosacea is also known as inflammatory or acne rosacea. This is because the symptoms mimic acne, which is also an inflammatory skin condition. Read on to find out more about this type of rosacea.
Papulopustular Rosacea
The condition begins as red or fluid-filled bumps that form close together on the skin. The skin itself may feel itchy or hot to touch. It can be tricky to tell the difference between Papulopustular Rosacea and acne without a medical diagnosis. People with lighter skin may experience a red flush. Sufferers with darker skin tones may experience a yellow/brown flush. The bumps and textured skin experienced as a symptom of papulopustular rosacea is sometime referred to as a ‘plaque’. These are raised red patches that look like a rash.

Triggers
Papulopustular Rosacea triggers are similar to the triggers of other types of rosacea:
- Extreme temperatures
- Sunlight
- Exercise
- Stress
- Spicy/hot foods
- Alcohol
- Intestinal bacteria
- Demodex skin mites.
Everyone is different and triggers vary from person to person. As with the other types of rosacea (link to previous blogs) there is no cure for PR because it is a chronic condition. This means symptoms can come and go. Managing PR with a healthy lifestyle, by avoiding triggers, is a great way to handle this condition.
Papulopustular Rosacea & Diet
Making changes to your diet can help reduce inflammation and prevent flare-ups. Focus on foods that are high in healthy fats like nuts (walnuts, almonds), fish (salmon, sardines), seeds and avocados. You can also include food that helps to balance your gut microbiome. Fibre-rich food (vegetables and whole grains) and fermented foods can help (think miso, kimchi and sauerkraut).
SkinBase IPL
SkinBase IPL targets vessels deep within the skin to ease symptoms of rosacea. The light energy passes through the skin, targeting red blood cells. The vessel walls absorb the light. The heat energy damages the vessel triggering the body’s natural repair mechanisms. By removing visible blood vessels, the amount of redness in the skin will reduce. The results are a fresher & more even skin tone. Check out the Rosacea skin concerns hub to find out more about IPL for Rosacea. You can also find your nearest SkinBase Therapist.
