The neck and décolletage are particularly fragile and frequently neglected areas of the skin, and it shows. So many of us experience ageing around this area before our facial skin starts to age. Here are our top tips for making sure your neck is well cared for.
Avoid this unexpected combination
You may never have thought about how different chemicals on your skin might react to sunlight, but there’s one particular kind that you should really be careful with, and that is perfume. Several of the components of perfume can react with sunlight to cause pigmentation on the skin. Spray perfume on your clothes, or on skin that won’t be exposed to sunlight instead of on your neck and décolletage.
Cleanse and moisturise
How do you clean your neck? Many of us completely miss our necks out of our skincare routines, and this is one of the primary reasons why the area ages so quickly. When you wash your face, always use your cleanser on your neck too, and make sure to cleanse the top of your chest with shower gel when you wash. Apply moisturiser to the entire area; after all, for much of the year your neck and décolletage are exposed to just as much sunlight, pollution and weather as your face, so they need the same care!
Use SPF
If you aren’t using SPF on this area then the skin will be damaged by UV exposure. This will cause collagen depletion leading to a loss of firmness, as well as pigmentation. In fact, sun damage is the leading cause of ageing for the skin, so start applying SPF now and don’t look back!
Neck muscle work out
Did you know that you can tone and tighten your neck through exercise, just like you can with the rest of your body? Try this: Stand up straight and press your hand against your forehead. Engage your neck muscles to try and push your head forward, and push back with your hand. You’ll feel your neck muscles working as they try to push your head forward. Do this for ten seconds, and then gently stretch your neck muscles out by moving your head to the right, then the left. Another exercise you can do to tone these muscles is to tilt your head back so your chin points towards the ceiling, and then make chewing and kissing motions with your mouth. For ten seconds. Regularly doing these exercises will keep your muscles strong and toned, to help keep your skin firm.
Anti-ageing exfoliation
If your neck and décolletage are starting to age, then we have the perfect treatment to help to reveal fresher, younger skin: SkinBase Microdermabrasion. MD removes dead skin cells and stimulates the circulation to brighten, smooth, and promote collagen production. It is the ideal way to kickstart your new ‘neck inclusive’ skincare routine, as it will rejuvenate your skin, reduce fine lines and even help to remove pigmentation from sun damage. Your skin will be left looking smooth, even-toned and youthful.
Firming rescue
If the skin on your neck is really losing its firmness, and you’re seeing the dreaded turkey neck or double chin starting to emerge, don’t panic! Sagging skin is caused by a loss of collagen and hyaluronic acid. SkinBase Radio Frequency treatments stimulate the production of these substances to restore the skin’s firmness, to lift it and smooth it out. It works by stimulating the body’s natural healing responses, causing it to flood the area being treated with new collagen and hyaluronic acid. In effect, Radio Frequency reverses the ageing process!
