How Menopause Affects the Skin

Perimenopause is when the period of time when menopausal symptoms begin. From hair loss to mood swings, menopause symptoms can begin as early as our late 30s. The average age is 51. During perimenopause, a key symptom is dry skin. Menopausal skincare is key. During the first 3 years of menopause, 25% of collagen is lost and elastin also starts to decrease. This leads to sagging and loose skin which can affect self-esteem.

Menopausal skin symptoms include:

  • Decreased collagen production
  • Increased fine lines and wrinkles
  • Thinner, looser skin
  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Dryness – the skin loses moisture as we age
  • An increase in facial hair (due to a decrease in oestrogen)
  • Acne breakouts
  • Sunspots/pigmentation

Menopausal Skincare

  • Stay hydrated. Hydrate the skin from within by drinking plenty of water. Use calming skincare products with hydrating ingredients. Combat dryness with hyaluronic acid, glycerin and ceramides
  • For hormonal breakouts focus on Salicylic acid – and glycolic acid if your skin can take it. Note that dryer skin needs gentler, calming products
  • For hormonal sun damage, focus on Vitamin C products
  • Have a rejuvenating treatment. SkinBase’s Collagen Lift boosts collagen and confidence. This treatment lifts sagging skin and treats any visible effects of menopause
  • Retinols can also be helpful by encouraging cells to regenerate at a faster rate. Start once or twice a week and gradually build up once your tolerance has increased.

As oestrogen levels plummet, skin can become thin and dry. The good news is that menopausal skin can be managed with a few simple but effective measures.
