We all know that words aren’t the only means of communication; gestures, facial expressions, body movements and posture can all convey a message. A lot of the time, how you come across can be just as (if not more) important than verbal language.
The Power of Your Actions
Without opening your mouth, you can say a lot with just the gestures, expressions and mannerisms you use. If you aren’t sure that you’re giving off the right impression with your body language, there are so many hints and tips out there on how to effectively hold your posture correctly and communicate through body language. Let’s look at a few of these:
- Keep your palms face up – This conveys openness and honesty. Having open palms means that you are seen to be seeking cooperation. We pick up on these signals subconsciously, getting a ‘good feeling’ about someone has a lot to do with their body language and expressions.
- Avoid crossing your arms – This can come across as a very closed off, defensive stance so keep your arms unfolded and your posture relaxed
- Eye contact – maintaining eye contact is very important. When you keep eye contact with the person you are talking to, it indicates that you’re focused and paying attention. Eye contact signifies that you are properly listening to what the other person has to say.
- Come across as interested – small gestures such as nodding your head and smiling are great ways to show that you are listening. Not only will these help you to come across as engaged, but they’ll also help you seem kind and friendly.
Appearance is Important
Whether you’re in the salon every day or not, you are still the face of your business. Both you and your team must be dressed appropriately and professionally at all times. If you’re concerned about the clothing that colleagues are wearing, introduce a dress code – if you don’t offer a uniform smart but casual usually works.
Stay Professional
One of the most important things to remember when working in a customer facing role is that you should always put personal matters aside at work. From the moment a client arrives, they must be your number one priority.
With this in mind, body language can be very easily picked up. So if you’re emanating negative vibes, clients will more than likely notice. Always try to smile. It may sound cheesy, but make sure it comes across as genuine as a fake smile can be seen a mile off. Think of something that genuinely makes you happy if you are struggling!
