The higher temperatures and time spent outdoors during summer can be a recipe for disaster for your skin. Let’s take a look at some common summer skin problems.
Summer Skin Concern: Acne
As temperatures are higher during summer, sweat is more likely to mix with bacteria and oils on your skin. This can result in clogged pores and acne breakouts.
Fix Summer Acne
Keep your skin as clean as possible during summer to reduce the risk of clogged pores. Remove sweat from the skin by blotting with a clean towel. Remove sweaty clothes as soon as you can and take a shower to cleanse the pores. Use non-comedogenic products in your routine. You may want to make your skincare routine more lightweight for summer. Use a combined moisturiser SPF product for less layers, such as the SkinBase Daily Repair and Protect cream. Having fewer layers on your skin minimises your chances of clogged pores.
Summer Skin Concern: Dry Skin
Even though the air is more humid in summer, dry, irritated skin is still possible. This applies even more if you spend lots of time in the sun and pool on holiday. Air conditioning can also dry out the skin.
Fix Summer Dry Skin
Shower in clean water after swimming in the pool, and use a mild cleanser to get any chlorine off the skin. Use warm (never hot) water to avoid stripping the skin of even more hydration. Always apply moisturiser as often as possible. Try to apply it to damp skin straight after your shower. Don’t forget the SPF to keep skin protected, and drink lots of water to hydrate from within.
Summer Skin Concern: Pigmentation
As temperatures rise, so does the risk of developing pigmentation. If you already suffer from pigmentation, being out in the sun may deepen the brown patches on the skin. If you do not already have pigmentation, you can easily develop it by spending time in the sun without SPF.
Fix Summer Pigmentation
After summer is the best time to begin a course of SkinBase IPL for pigmentation. The skin is no longer exposed to sun and the treatment can get to work. If pigmentation develops during your summer fun, find your nearest SkinBase therapist. Book in for a course of treatment in September. In the meantime, start wearing your SPF daily to keep the skin protected and prevent more pigmentation.
Summer Skin Concern: Heat Rash
Heat rash is common in summer. It is caused when a sweat gland duct is blocked or inflamed. Sweat gets trapped beneath the skin instead of evaporating. This causes bumps on the skin. The type of heat rash is dependent on how deep the sweat is trapped beneath the skin. The mildest form of heat rash causes easily breakable fluid-filled bumps. The deepest form of heat rash causes firm, painful, itchy and inflamed bumps that break open.
Fix Summer Heat Rash
Heat rash is one of the more common summer skin problems, but usually goes away without treatment once the skin cools down. You can prevent it by dressing in loose, lightweight clothing. When the weather is at its hottest, stay in the shade (between 11am and 3pm) and limit physical activity. Avoid thick creams that block pores, and switch out your skincare products for more lightweight ones.
