Skin ageing is inevitable. Collagen and elastin fibres – the “scaffolding” of the skin – break down as we age, causing a loss of plumpness and elasticity. However, many people experience preventable, premature signs of ageing on their skin, due to lifestyle and environmental factors. So, here are 5 easy ways to prevent skin ageing.

5 Easy Ways to Prevent Skin Ageing
We are aware that there are no ways to prevent skin ageing, as it is a natural process that happens to everyone. However, some simple, everyday choices can negatively impact the ageing process. Therefore, premature signs of ageing can appear on the skin, such as fine lines, wrinkles and pigmentation. Thankfully, you can adopt some healthy habits to keep your skin vibrant and youthful for longer.
1. SPF
If you are not wearing SPF everyday, it is likely that sun damage will result in premature signs of ageing showing up on your skin. Chronic sun exposure causes photoageing, with symptoms such as wrinkles, loss of elasticity, hyperpigmentation, sun spots, broken capillaries, redness and increased sensitivity. To prevent this, you must stay protected daily with SPF, regardless of the weather. A broad spectrum SPF 30+ is key in defending your skin from the sun, and maintaining a healthy wrinkle-free complexion. Get the SkinBase Daily Protect SPF in the SkinBase Shop here.
Top Tips:
- Ensure you are using the correct amount of SPF for full coverage
- Reapply as frequently as necessary (check your SPF to find out how long your skin will be protected for).
- Don’t forget your neck!
- Remember that UVA rays (those responsible for premature ageing) can penetrate through glass and reach your skin – you are not protected from the sun without SPF!
2. Sunglasses
When you are out in the sun, even if you are wearing your SPF, another culprit can cause premature signs of ageing on the skin. Repeated muscle movements cause “grooves” in the skin, which over time turn into wrinkles. When you are squinting in the bright sunshine, you are contributing to the formation of “crows feet” at the sides of your eyes. So, after covering up with SPF, pop on a pair of sunglasses as another easy way to prevent skin ageing.
Top tip:
Squinting is not the only repeated muscle movement that may be impacting your skin. While adequate hydration is beneficial for your skin, frequently drinking from a straw can create lines around your mouth, due to the constant pursing of your lips. Get rid of the straw, and sip water from a glass instead!
3. Beauty Sleep
Getting enough sleep is incredibly beneficial for your skin, as your complexion will repair damage from the day as you get some rest overnight. However, your sleeping position may be causing premature signs of ageing to appear on your skin. Sleeping on your front or your side can cause the skin to fold or stretch as you sleep. You may also wake up with telltale creases across your face from your pillowcase. As well as these sleep-related wrinkles, side sleepers may also have more volume loss on the side of their face they sleep on. If you want an easy way to help your skin as you sleep, invest in a silk pillowcase for a smoother surface, to prevent the creases in your skin. If you are serious about getting your beauty sleep, try the skin friendliest method of sleeping – on your back!
Top tip:
A silk pillowcase is good for preventing creases in your skin, and is also beneficial for preventing hair breakage, and minimising bacteria and dust accumulation.
4. No Smoking
Another of our easy ways to prevent skin ageing isn’t something you can do, it is something you shouldn’t. If you want to maintain a youthful complexion for longer – don’t smoke! Smoking allows a range of toxins to affect the skin, resulting in dehydration and impaired collagen production. This exacerbates ageing skin damage, resulting in a lacklustre, sagging appearance, with more wrinkles. So, if you’re a smoker, you should quit for the sake of your skin. You will be pleased to hear that when you do quit, your body will start to heal naturally, allowing your skin to regain the vibrance of a non-smoker over time. So the sooner you quit the better.
