We asked our SkinBase experts…

Which treatments can be combined with SkinBase microdermabrasion?

We are often asked how people can add to microdermabrasion for extra pampering. Making your microdermabrasion treatments last longer can transform it into a longer, more luxurious beauty treatment. Microdermabrasion can also help to enhance the results of other beauty treatments.

First of all, what is microdermabrasion doing to the client’s skin?

Microdermabrasion essentially removes the top layer of dead skin cells, leaving a rejuvenated layer of skin. The skin then readily absorbs skincare products. It’s this deep exfoliation which over time leaves clients with an intensely smooth skin tone and minimised fine lines. Microdermabrasion can also help with a whole host of other skin problems, including acne scarring.

Addition of Luxury Add-ons

Undertaking further treatments including facial massages with essential oils directly after a microdermabrasion session is as a no-no. The skin is vulnerable and liable to large outbreaks or excessive redness should it be overworked or subjected to a deluge of product after treatment. A calming, soothing mask, (collagen masks are popular) is a great option. LED light therapy is also proving a very popular choice with our therapists.

Body treatments

Another way to add luxury is by working on other areas of the body. This can be done while a mask is applied. For example, treating customers to a luxury scalp or a neck and shoulder massage, or in conjunction with a relaxing, sculpting body wrap.

Microdermabrasion Body Treatments

People often forget about using microdermabrasion on other body areas. It’s great for uneven skin tone and congested skin. Used on the arms it can really help keratosis pilaris; removing the build up of skin. If you suffer with spots or scarring on the back or chest area it can be used here too. Microdermabrasion is an exfoliating treatment so can be used on any area that requires exfoliation

Microdermabrasion Manicures and Pedicures

Another great treatment option is to incorporate your microdermabrasion into a luxury manicure or pedicure, older clients particularly can benefit helping to remove fine lines and wrinkles and the appearance of age spots. Don’t let those hands give away their age!

Consultation is key

Just how sensitive a client’s skin is will be determined during the consultation. At SkinBase, we provide full training, placing particular importance on the client consultation and skin condition. This is your guide to suitable aftercare products and possible complementary treatments and so is an important aspect of the treatment process.

Microdermabrasion to maximise results

There are many instances whereby microdermabrasion is hugely beneficial as a precursor to maximize the effects of further treatments. For example, some therapists perform electrical facials after microdermabrasion. The intense exfoliation beforehand allows deeper penetration of products, maximising the benefits from the further treatments.  Another favourite, is to use microdermabrasion prior to laser treatments. Microdermabrasion leaves the skin at its most clean, in turn there is less scatter from the laser, enabling the best penetration of the laser beam.

Wait to perform Injectables or Fillers

Injectables and dermal fillers are best used after a course of microdermabrasion treatments. Microdermabrasion treats fine lines by increasing collagen production – this is beneficial as it significantly reduces the need for injectables. They can then be administered on just the deeper lines the microdermabrasion is unable to shift. For best practice, it’s advisable to leave at least 48 hours before any injectables are used following the microdermabrasion. Leave at least two weeks before microdermabrasion if the client has had Injectables or fillers already.

Testimonial: “JC was so low, suicidal at points. Sore, red, angry, his skin was awful, we had tried everything and doctors you name it. We reached out to Becky, who was wonderful. My son was quiet and withdrawn, lacked confidence and self esteem, and locked himself away from the world. Becky booked us in for a consultation to discuss different options of treatments and we decided the new hydro treatment would be the best option. We started the course and JC was nervous but Becky was great with him talking him through everything, step by step! As we went each time JC’s skin got better and better, but also the difference in him was huge, he was gaining confidence, shoulders back, head held high. We have watched his skin change from this red, aggressive, angry skin that was sore, acne was debilitating to him but now he is confident, holds his head up high and has even got his first job! We are so proud. When we met Becky I felt confident she would help us get his skin better and back on track but what has actually happened is skin looks amazing but to see our son gain confidence has been the biggest win! Teens often get pushed aside, put on string meds and told “it’s just your age” but this isn’t what they want to hear, but The SkinBase treatments Becky has done has changed his life! We cannot thank you enough Becky! JC is continuing with the treatments as it still gets the odd breakouts but the scarring is still improving week in week out. The hydro Facial is just amazing and we cannot recommend it enough and of course Becky and her passion for skin and helping people is wonderful!”
