But, to make sure the benefits of your treatment last for as long as possible, your face care after microdermabrasion is essential. It’s important you follow the aftercare provided by your therapist to avoid adverse reactions after treatment. Some of these may seem harmless enough and you might think, does it really matter? Well, yes, it really does! 1. Adhere to the advice given Reactions to the crystal used are so rare but what you do to your skin after treatment is super important. Avoid anti-ageing creams or anything with active ingredients. Use something simple and soothing such as the SkinBase Moisturising cream with SPF. Remember, during microdermabrasion the outermost layer of skin is removed so your skin is more susceptible to the elements and you should avoid exposure to UV or any chemicals. 2. Avoid exfoliating skin products In the week after your treatment, we recommend avoiding exfoliating skin care products. Microdermabrasion helps to remove the outer layer of dead skin cells on your face and removes the protective layer from the top of your skin. If you have just had a microdermabrasion treatment or you’re thinking about booking a treatment, you will be able to look forward to having healthy, happy skin.

1. Adhere to the advice given

Reactions to the crystal used are so rare but what you do to your skin after treatment is super important.

2. Avoid exfoliating skin products

In the week after your treatment, we recommend avoiding exfoliating skin care products. Microdermabrasion helps to remove the outer layer of dead skin cells on your face and removes the protective layer from the top of your skin. After microdermabrasion, you’re left with fresh and healthy skin cells and exfoliating these cells can cause skin irritation or hyperpigmentation.

Give your skin time to recover from the treatment before you go back to using exfoliating products.

We also recommend using a gentle cleanser in the week after your treatment for the same reasons.

3. Use SPF & avoid the sun

Use SPF 15+ (at least) throughout a course of microdermabrasion to protect skin and regularly apply moisturiser to replenish moisture.

If your skin does feel hot or dry and itchy – splash with cold water and apply a recommended moisturiser regularly.

We also recommend staying out of direct sunlight for at least 48 hours too as UV rays can damage your skin and slow the healing process down. If you can’t avoid this, wearing sunscreen is the best way to protect your skin.

4. Moisturise

Moisturiser helps to lock moisture into your skin and helps to protect your skin by providing a barrier between your skin and harsh environmental agents. This will help to maintain the results of your treatment and keep your skin looking fresh and smooth.

Moisturising should be part of your skincare routine anyway to keep it looking healthy and to protect your skin.

5. Avoid the gym or heavy exercise

Your skin will be much more sensitive in the days after your treatment so avoid heavy exercise that causes you to sweat to avoid irritation for 24 hours.

Can you wear makeup after microdermabrasion?

Try not to schedule your microdermabrasion treatment on the same day as a big event. You can expect to see some redness in your face which will fade quickly.

You can wear makeup after your treatment but we recommend waiting for 12 hours. If you do decide to wear makeup during that time we recommend using mineral makeup as this is less likely to cause irritation.

What to do after microdermabrasion

  • For 24 hours: No swimming, facial waxing or fake tan application
  • Up to 48 Hours after: No sauna, sun beds or sun exposure. No injectables, collagen injections or dermal fillers.
  • For 72 Hours: Do not use any anti-ageing creams, AHA’s, glycolics, retinol or exfoliating products.

At all times during a course, apply SPF 15 (at least) and avoid UV exposure. Regular moisturiser applications are vital to replenish the skin and prevent it becoming dry and peeling.

In short; avoid chemicals, heat treatments, UV exposure and apply your moisturiser regularly with an SPF of 15 or higher!
