How does IPL for Hirsutism Work?

What to expect during the treatment?
Before the treatment, you will need to shave the area that is going to be treated. Only 1mm of hair growth should be present during treatment for the best results. This is to ensure that the light energy is focused on the hair follicle and not on any hair above the skin. During the treatment, you will feel a cold sensation while the cooling handset is being used, and a warm sensation when the flash handset is used.
It should not be painful, and is often described as similar to an elastic band snapping gently onto the skin. However, some people may experience discomfort, especially if the treatment is done on sensitive areas of the body. The length of the treatment depends on the size of the area being treated, but it usually takes between 30 minutes and an hour. IPL for hirsutism is one of the quickest methods of hair removal, due to the large spot size used.
What to expect after the treatment?
After the treatment, you may experience some redness and warmth of the treatment area. This is normal and should subside naturally within 24 hours. If you wish, you can use a cold compress to calm the skin, but avoid using ice. Post-treatment, you may also notice that the hair in the treated area begins to fall out. This is because the heat from the light pulses has damaged the hair follicle, preventing hair growth. It is important to avoid heat treatments, such as a hot bath, bleaching creams and perfumed products for 48 hours after treatment. Limit UV exposure, particularly in the first two weeks, and always ensure you have SPF on for maximum protection.
How many treatments are required?
The number of treatments required depends on your skin type, hair type, and the area being treated. On average, most people require between 6-10 treatments for permanent hair reduction, but this varies between clients. If you have hirsutism, you may have thicker, coarse hair and require more treatments. Between sessions, you should expect an average of a 4-6 week interval as the hair grows in different stages.
