Lessons From Our SkinBase Therapists

Our SkinBase Therapists have plenty of knowledge and experience to share. From introducing the competition during consultations and encouraging clients to take part, to capturing consistent before-and-after images and submitting a strong entry, their practical advice can help you make the most of every transformation.

Q: Any tips for getting great before-and-after shots?

Below, our Transformation 26 finalists share their top tips for taking the best before and after images.

Top Tip: Take the same picture.

  • Perry Walker Skincare Specialist: “Make sure you get your lighting set up, and get your camera angles right so that you are consistently taking the same image.”
  • Nina, Karma Beauty: “I always ensure that I look back at the before photos and make sure that the after ones are exactly in that same position. So, when we look back they are the exact same picture and the client can see that.”
  • Emma, The Beauty Barn: “My biggest tip is to keep the photos consistent. Same lighting, same pose, at the same angles every time. The best way to accurately capture the progress and results.”

Top Tip: Take pictures of the beginning & the end.

Gail, DB Skin/Therapy: “I think doing a picture after each session maybe doesn’t do any good. It’s a bit like losing weight or going to the gym, you’ll see the difference over a bigger space of time rather than daily. If you are doing a long course, maybe 8+ treatments, then a beginning, middle and end cumulative progress photos will be best.”

Q: As a finalist, what’s your top tip for salons talking to clients about the competition?

Top Tip: Tell them about the Caribbean holiday!

  • Michelle, Pink Beauty: Talking to my clients about the Transformation competition is easy as everyone loves the idea of winning a holiday!
  • Aimee, Ayano Spa: “Say: ‘did you know that we have this promotion going on?’ SkinBase is very kindly offering a Caribbean holiday to both the therapist and the client separately, so they don’t need to go on holiday together, for the transformation. If they would be willing to have their photos taken then why not, they are coming here and having the treatment done anyway so they might as well.”

Top Tip: Don’t put too much pressure on it

  • Tina, Skinoveve: You’ve got to be on that journey with your client. Stay excited, tell them their photos are so good, would they mind you showing their results with other potential clients? Show the evidence to others. The photos speak for themselves. No hard sell needed.
  • Laura, The Beauty Room: “Always take before pics and then after your clients treatment course is complete and you’re happy with the results, bring it up in a fun way. Never be too hard on yourself if it doesn’t go how you’d like. You can only try your best for your clients and yourself!”

Top Tip: Let the fabulous results do the talking:

  • Emma, The Beauty Barn: “When the time came, I simply explained that SkinBase runs a competition and asked whether she would be happy for me to submit her photos. She was delighted and agreed because she was really pleased with the results and the transformation she had achieved.”
  • Gail, DB Skin/Therapy: Have the Transformation of the Year books ready. I really think that seeing real results from real people and real salons is what helps. f you think that you are getting good results from a treatment why not just mention it as an option?
  • Francesca, The Luminous Clinic: My top tip for other salons is sharing previous success stories and showing genuine before and after results. Clients are often surprised by how much their skin has improved.”

Q: How do you support clients in feeling confident enough to enter their results into the competition?

Below, our Transformation 26 finalists share their top tips for helping clients’ feel confident in entering the competition.

Top Tip: Let them stay anonymous.

  • Nina, Karma Beauty: “I always give my client the option that they don’t have to show their whole face. So they can be anonymous and we can just use certain areas of their face.”
  • Gail, DB Skin/Therapy: “If the client isn’t feeling confident enough to enter the competition, I tell them that we can blur out eyes or distinctive features so that people don’t know it’s them and you’re allowed to enter anonymously.”
  • Aimee, Ayano Spa: “If their photographs are not identifiable and it is just a snippet of the area that you’re working with, then no one will know who it is anyway.”

Top Tip: Make it exciting

  • Francesca, The Luminous Clinic: “I focus on celebrating progress rather than striving for perfection. Every skin journey is unique. Everyone’s different. We recognise the commitment that they’ve made and the results that they’ve achieved. Seeing their transformation through photographs often gives them the confidence to take part because they want to show their skin off, they want to show their confidence and they want to show how consistent they’ve been.”
  • Tina, Skinoveve: “The excitement is real! My clients are on a journey with me. We are like a community. I’ve told them I want to enter as many of them as I can because I want someone from my clinic to win.”

Q: What advice would you give to therapists thinking about entering the Transformation of the Year competition?

Below, our Transformation 26 finalists share their advice for those considering entering the competition.

  • Perry Walker Skincare Specialist: “Just enter. Don’t overthink it. All of my clients want to enter. It’s a really amazing selling point for your business, it’s so empowering. SkinBase has got such an amazing community. I think entering is so wonderful and it’s lovely for us as other therapists to be able to see what other people have achieved.”
  • Nina, Karma Beauty: “I would recommend anyone to just go for it. Who knows where you could end up? I’m sure the winners of the Caribbean holiday would all say just absolutely go for it. You’ve got to be in it to win it, that’s my motto.”
  • Emma, The Beauty Barn: For anybody thinking about it: go for it. If you’ve achieved genuine results and have good photos, then do it. The process is really straightforward and it is a fantastic opportunity to showcase your results.”
  • Laura, The Beauty Room: “I would tell therapists thinking of entering to just go for it! Have faith in yourself and your work and don’t take it too seriously. There are so many amazing entrants every year and if the worst happens, just try again next time!”
  • Lindsay, Bodyology: “Just do it, document everything. Support your clients fully and trust the process. The competition isn’t just about the results. It’s about the client’s story behind the results and you’ve got nothing to lose.”
  • Aimee, Ayano Spa: “It is so easy and simple to do. All you need to do is add your before and after photos to the Facebook group. You’re probably going to take before and after pictures anyway to document your progress, so you will already have the pictures on your phone.”
