While we all love the warmth that summer brings, it can wreak havoc on our skin. The heat causes us to sweat – so summer is a prime time for skin problems. While some issues can’t be avoided, some are preventable. So what are the top 3 post-summer skin concerns?
Top 3 Post-Summer Skin Concerns
Thread Veins
These thin broken capillaries – the spidery red lines across your skin – are commonly discussed post-summer skin concerns. Why? Excessive exposure to the sun (without SPF) allows UV rays to damage the walls of the superficial blood vessels in the skin. This causes thinning which leads to the appearance of bruising and bleeding. The dilated and broken blood vessels become visible through the skin. Most often near the nose, over the cheeks and on the chin.
UVA rays are most responsible for the damage due to their greater depth of penetration. UVB rays also contribute by causing superficial epidermal damage. These dilate the veins and capillaries. Fluid leakage and inflammation from the dilated blood vessels under the skin – or sunburn – is common. As UVA and UVB rays are both responsible, it is important to protect the skin with a broad spectrum SPF. Though thread veins are harmless, they can be unsightly. The good news is you don’t have to live with them. Check out our SkinBase SPF and book a course of IPL.

Pigmentation
Excess sun exposure allows damaging UV rays to have long-term effects on the skin. Pigmentation is another common post-summer skin concern. It affects everyone – whether you slather the SPF on or not.
When you are in the sun, your skin will try to protect itself from the detrimental UVA rays by producing more melanin. Melanin is what brings colour to the skin. When UV rays trigger melanin production, blotchy patches appear on the skin and it discolours. The damage caused by sun exposure often appears with age. This hyperpigmentation is often referred to as sunspots, age spots, or liver spots.
Pigmentation can be hard to treat. If you do invest in treatments, make sure you prevent future pigmentation by avoiding sun exposure as much as possible. Always protect with SPF.
Unwanted Hair
Unwanted hair is a common post-summer skin concern. Time and effort is needed during summer (waxing/shaving etc.) to feel secure and confident. If you are one of those people, you may want a more permanent solution – and we’ve got exactly that. Plan ahead to be hair free in time for next summer.
