If you have just had an IPL treatment (or you’re thinking about booking a course of treatments) you can look forward to healed and rejuvenated skin. To make sure the benefits of your treatment last for as long as possible, your IPL aftercare is essential. It’s important you follow the aftercare provided by your SkinBase therapist to avoid adverse reactions. Some of these may seem harmless enough and you might think, does it really matter? The answer is yes, it really does!

IPL Aftercare: first 24 hours
The skin may be red and warm. This is perfectly normal and will subside with time. You can apply a cold compress if it is itchy or bothers you – but avoid using ice as this can irritate the skin. Soothing ingredients can help to calm the skin. Aloe Vera is a great soothing plant. Buy ours in the SkinBase shop. Try to avoid using makeup on the treatment area. This allows natural comfortable healing.
Aftercare: 48 Hours
Avoid all sun exposure and heat treatments. This includes hot baths and showers, saunas, and steam baths. Don’t swim in highly chlorinated waters and avoid bleaching creams. It’s best to use natural product that aren’t perfumed (soaps, creams and perfumes). Leave any temporary skin responses such as redness to subside naturally. Try not to touch, scratch or irritate the area. This will interrupt the healing process.
IPL Aftercare: 72 Hours
You should avoid shaving the area that’s been treated. Redness can last for 2-5 days so it is best to avoid strenuous exercise. Sweating can irritate the skin which is more sensitive after a treatment.
Aftercare: 1 Week
Never exfoliate the treated area and don’t use peels. You can gradually resume normal activities (and exercise), but avoid direct sun exposure and slather on the SPF.
IPL Aftercare: 2 Weeks:
Avoid UV Exposure and self-tan. Prolonged outdoor activity is a no-no – it can expose the skin to a lot of wind or sun. Avoid waxing, plucking and threading (at all times during a course) and don’t use depilation creams.
Aftercare: 6 Weeks:
Use sun protection SPF 30+. You should be doing this daily anyway and limit sun exposure. Do not use tanning beds for at least 6 weeks after the treatment. Make sure you stay hydrated inside and out – drink plenty of water and keep your skin well moisturised.
Take IPL aftercare seriously to maximise the results. Follow our guidelines and you won’t go wrong.
