Microdermabrasion – Can It Ruin your Skin?

Microdermabrasion is a non-invasive exfoliation process. Tiny abrasive crystals are sprayed onto the skin and worked in using a handheld device. This removes the top layer of dead skin cells. A built-in vacuum sucks up the dead skin to reveal fresh healthy skin underneath.

In the wrong hands and without appropriate training many skin treatments could cause injury to the skin. However, all our SkinBase therapists receive training to offer the award-winning SkinBase microdermabrasion treatments.

Your SkinBase therapist will always assess your skin for suitability for microdermabrasion treatment and carry out a consultation to make sure it is the right choice for you!

Microdermabrasion is a controlled exfoliation using tiny micro crystals that work on a superficial level to knock off the loose dead cells from the top layer of the skin and stimulate blood flow to the area. Fresh, healthy skin is revealed giving you that post-treatment glow.

This treatment is suitable for all skin types and is effective on a variety of skin concerns:

  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Dull tired-looking skin
  • Uneven skin tone
  • Acne scarring
  • Pigmentation and sun damage
  • Blackheads and enlarged pores

Safe & Controlled

Microdermabrasion is completely safe and should not hurt. It can feel a little tingly but it should never be painful. Your therapist will start on the lowest intensity. They will gradually increase it as your skin gets used to the feeling. Microdermabrasion improves circulation and boosts collagen production!

The crystals are a sterile inert compound unlikely to cause any irritation. It is non-invasive and there is little to no downtime. It is a good idea to always have a patch test before your first treatment.

Side Effects

The only concern after a Microdermabrasion facial is your skin will be more susceptible to UV from the sun – so don’t be shy with the sunscreen! It’s important to use it all times during and after a course of microdermabrasion (and should be used daily anyway!)  It can feel a little tight and tingly but this soon passes, drink plenty of water and keep skin well moisturised and hydrated. Always listen to your therapist about aftercare.

As long as Microdermabrasion is performed correctly it is a very safe procedure. If at any point during the treatment you are uncomfortable then let your therapist know.

As with any deep exfoliation slather on the sunscreen. Buy SkinBase SPF.
