Common Client Questions About SkinBase IPL
1. What is IPL
SkinBase IPL is a non-invasive treatment that uses broad-spectrum light to target and treat a range of skin concerns. SkinBase IPL uses cut off filters to provide a range of wavelengths to treat the skin. The system filters out any unwanted wavelengths, and uses the remaining light to treat specific structures within the skin.
2. What concerns can IPL treat?
SkinBase IPL is a multi-functional system designed to treat:
- Unwanted Hair
- Acne
- Fine Lines & Wrinkles
- Pigmentation
- Broken Capillaries and Thread Veins
- Rosacea and Redness
Its versatility makes it an excellent option for clients with a range of goals – from smoother skin to clearer complexions.
3. How Does IPL Hair Reduction Work?
For hair removal, the melanin in hair absorbs the wavelengths of light, converting them into heat. The heat then targets the root of the unwanted hair, causing controlled damage to the hair follicle. This makes any hairs fall out at the root, and also disables the follicle so hair cannot grow in the future.

4. How Does IPL Photorejuvenation Work?
For photorejuvenation, the light energy targets the red blood cells in the blood vessels. The light passes through the skin and is absorbed by the vessel wall or pigment. This heat energy causes damage to the vessel or pigment and the body’s natural repair mechanisms take over and remove the damaged tissue. The results are fresher looking & smoother skin.
3. Is IPL Hair Reduction Permanent?
IPL hair reduction offers long-lasting results, and many clients experience a permanent reduction of up to 95% after a full course. However, due to hair growth cycles and hormonal changes, occasional maintenance sessions may be needed over time.
4. Is The Treatment Painful?
A specially developed cryo-cooling handset is placed on the skin before the treatment to ensure comfort. Only a slight warm, tingling sensation will be felt during the sessions. The sensation is quick and tolerable, and any discomfort typically fades immediately after the flash.
5. How Many IPL Sessions Will I Need?
The amount of sessions required depends on the treatment area and the concern being addressed. On average:
- Hair reduction: 6–10 sessions, spaced 4–6 weeks apart
- Skin rejuvenation and pigmentation: 3–6 sessions
- Acne and vascular issues: 3–6 sessions
6. Is There Any Downtime?
One of the benefits of SkinBase IPL is that it is a non-surgical, non-invasive treatment, with no downtime necessary. Clients can usually return to normal activities straight away. Some redness or warmth may appear temporarily after treatment, but it generally subsides within a few hours.

7. Who Is Suitable For IPL Treatments?
IPL is suitable for most skin types, particularly Fitzpatrick types I-IV. It is ideal for those seeking a non-surgical solution for:
- Signs of ageing like fine lines and sun damage
- Acne scarring and breakouts
- Uneven pigmentation or skin tone
- Unwanted hair removal
Contraindications: IPL may not be suitable if you have very dark skin, certain medical conditions, or are pregnant.
8. What Aftercare Is Required?
After IPL, we recommend:
- For up to 24 hours: avoid using make up on the treated area, allowing the skin to cool
naturally and more comfortably.
- For 48 Hours: avoid all heat treatments, no swimming, do not use bleaching creams or perfumed products. Do not touch, pick, scratch or otherwise irritate the area.
- For 72 Hours: No shaving.
- For 1 week: Do not exfoliate the treated area or use peels.
- For 2 weeks: No UV exposure, self tan, waxing, plucking, threading or depilation creams.
