What Is Microdermabrasion?
SkinBase microdermabrasion is a non-invasive skin resurfacing treatment designed to gently exfoliate the outer layer of dead skin cells. Using a handheld wand, your SkinBase therapist will use tiny crystals to exfoliates the skin, while a vacuum suction removes the debris.
Ageing & The Skin
As we age, several changes occur in the skin, as described below. Microdermabrasion addresses these concerns by encouraging skin cell regeneration and promoting collagen production, helping to restore a youthful glow.
Collagen and Elastin Decrease
Collagen and elastin are the building blocks of youthful skin. Collagen provides firmness, while elastin gives the skin its stretch. However, during your late 20s, your body begins to produce about 1% less collagen per year. By the time you reach your 50s/60s, collagen levels have significantly declined, leading to fine lines, wrinkles and sagging skin.
Slower Skin Cell Turnover
For young adults, the skin cell turnover process works quite efficiently, naturally renewing itself every 28 days. As you age, this process slows down. By your 50s, it can take up to 45–60 days for new skin cells to surface. As a result of this, dead skin cells begin to accumulate on the skin’s surface, making you appear tired and lacklustre. Slower turnover can also lead to congestion, contributing to blackheads and uneven texture.
Thinner Skin
With age, the dermis (the middle layer of the skin) begins to thin. This is due to the breakdown of collagen and elastin, as described above, combined with reduced fat in the hypodermis (bottom layer of skin). Thinner skin is more prone tears or bruising. Visible veins and capillaries may also occur, as thinner layers of skin allow underlying blood vessels become more noticeable.
Hyperpigmentation
Years of sun exposure can catch up with you as you age, forming the “age spots” you may be noticing. UV damage accelerates the breakdown of collagen and also triggers an overproduction of melanin, resulting in dark spots and an uneven skin tone.
Benefits of Microdermabrasion for Ageing Skin
There are a variety of benefits when using microdermabrasion for ageing skin.
Reduces Fine Lines and Wrinkles
By exfoliating the outer layer of skin, SkinBase microdermabrasion softens the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, making them appear less pronounce, and leaving your skin smoother and more refined. The combined approach of exfoliating crystals and the vacuum also stimulates cell turnover and collagen production, for better skin for longer.
Improves Skin Texture and Tone
It is common for mature skin to develop a rough, uneven tone and texture. Microdermabrasion gently resurfaces to combat this, by evening out any discolouration, sloughing off rough patches and revealing the softer, smoother skin underneath.
Minimises Pores
As the skin ages, pores can appear larger due to a loss of elasticity and the accumulation of debris. Microdermabrasion helps by deep cleaning the pores to remove any trapped dirt, oil, or skin cells that are ‘stretching’ the pores. MD also minimises the appearance of enlarged pores, by creating a smoother surface and providing an overall glow.
Boosts Collagen Production
As we have mentioned, collagen and elastin are essential for firm, plump skin, but their natural production declines with age. Microdermabrasion stimulates the skin’s healing response, encouraging the production of these proteins. Therefore, allowing the skin to look more youthful.
Enhances Skincare Product Absorption
Dead skin cells act as a barrier on the skin, preventing your skincare products from absorbing as deeply as they could. By removing this layer, SkinBase microdermabrasion ensures the enhanced absorption of your skincare products e.g. serums, moisturisers, eye creams. This maximises the effectiveness of active ingredients like retinol, peptides, and vitamin C, that also work to rejuvenate your skin.
What to Expect During SkinBase Microdermabrasion
If you want to find your nearest SkinBase Therapist, but are not sure what to expect, we’ve got you covered.
- Consultation: Initially, your SkinBase therapist will carry out a patch test and thorough consultation to devise a microdermabrasion treatment plan for your skin concerns (Don’t forget to ask them about our Transformation of the year competition).
- Cleanse: Before performing the treatment, a the SkinBase Purifying Gel cleanser will be used to ensure your skin is ready for treatment. Clean skin allows the crystals to penetrate the skin unobstructed, and enhances the effectiveness of the treatment.
- Microdermabrasion: A wand delivering a fine jet of abrasive crystals will be passed over the skin. Dead skin particles will be abraded away and a vacuum action will remove the debris. After passing across the skin area once, the therapist will target problem areas like open pores, pigmentation and blemishes.
- Aftercare: After the treatment, the SkinBase Hydration Max moisturiser will be applied to replenish and restore moisture, followed by the SkinBase Daily Protect SPF. This will ensure the skin stays protected post-treatment.
How Many Treatments for Ageing Skin?
For achieving the best results with ageing skin, we recommend a course of 6-8 treatments, performed every 7 to 10 days. Once the treatment course is complete, a monthly microdermabrasion maintenance treatment will sustain your youthful glow.
Microdermabrasion + Collagen Lift
For a more comprehensive anti-ageing regime, you can pair microdermabrasion with SkinBase Collagen Lift and invest in the Collagen Lift ULTIMATE treatment instead. Using combined SkinBase technologies allows you to address multiple ageing skin concerns in one session. The dual action of an ULTIMATE treatment targets surface level issues and allows a deeper rejuvenation too. As a result of this comprehensive approach, you can maximise your results and achieve your skin goals much quicker.
Are There Any Downsides of Microdermabrasion for Ageing Skin?
A correctly performed procedure by a fully qualified SkinBase microdermabrasion therapist will result in nothing more than the skin feeling tight, occasionally with a mild redness. These effects will normally subside within 24 hours of the treatment. Sometimes microdermabrasion can trigger a healing crisis in problematic skin, such as an acne breakout in acne sufferers or pimples for those with congested skin. This is a sign that the treatment is taking effect. This temporary reaction will subside and great improvements will be seen over subsequent treatments.
