Do You Need a Double Cleanse?

Double cleansing is a two-step routine that is recommended to remove the layer of makeup and impurities before properly cleansing the skin. It’s a much deeper clean for pores. You only need to double cleanse at night when extra products like SPF and makeup can linger. One cleanse is sometimes not enough to remove everything and purify the skin. If bacteria and pollutants aren’t washed away properly the remnants can lead to breakouts and even pigmentation.

How to Double Cleanse?

Double cleansing is easy . All you have to do is repeat your cleanse again once you’ve finished. It can be better to use different types of cleansers if you are tackling specific skin concerns. Consider using an oil-based cleanser first and follow up with a foaming cleanser. Unless you have dry skin – then you should use the oil-based cleanser second. If you are acne-prone, avoid oil-based cleansers all together and find a light gel-based cleanser (or micellar water).

Without a double cleanse you may get a build-up of dirt and grime on the skin. This can lead to clogged pores and breakouts. The temperature of the water is also important, as is the time you take to cleanse. Use lukewarm water (never hot), and massage the cleanser in thoroughly – both times!

Can you Over Cleanse the skin?

Be careful not to over cleanse.  Over-cleansing can affect your skin’s barrier. You don’t want to get rid of the natural oils your skin needs – and always follow up with a toner to rebalance the skin. All skin types benefit from a double cleanse – but make sure you use the best type of cleanser for your skin type. Your skin will be much more able to absorb moisturiser and products after a double cleanse. Include a weekly exfoliation and your skin will be singing.
