What is Cellulite?

Cellulite is the result of fat deposits that push through the connective tissue beneath the skin, creating a dimpled appearance. It is most commonly found in areas with a higher concentration of fat cells, where the connective tissue is thinner and less supportive. The presence of cellulite is not necessarily related to weight or body fat percentage, as individuals of all shapes and sizes can have it.

Causes of Cellulite

It is time to find out what causes it. While we don’t understand the exact causes, several factors contribute to the development:

Hormonal Factors

Hormones, such as oestrogen, insulin, noradrenaline, and prolactin, play a role in the development of cellulite. These hormones regulate blood flow, fat storage, and collagen production, all of which influence the appearance of the skin.

Genetic Predisposition

Genetic factors can contribute to an individual’s susceptibility. Certain genes may influence the distribution of fat, metabolism, circulation, and the structure of connective tissue, all of which can lead to cellulite.

Lifestyle and Diet

Sedentary lifestyles, poor dietary choices, and weight fluctuations can contribute to the development of cellulite. A lack of physical activity, combined with a diet high in processed foods, sugar, and saturated fats, can promote fat accumulation and decrease collagen production, exacerbating the condition.

Poor Circulation

Impaired blood flow and lymphatic drainage can contribute. When circulation is compromised, toxins and fluids accumulate. This leads to increased fat cell enlargement and the appearance of cellulite on the skin.

Collagen and Connective Tissue Structure

The structure and elasticity of collagen and connective tissue play a crucial role in cellulite development. If collagen fibres within the skin become weakened or lose their flexibility, they are less able to contain fat cells, resulting in the characteristic dimpled appearance.

Client Testimonial: “Jodie is extremely professional and knowledgeable throughout the IPL treatment sessions. She explains the process and what to expect so that you are put at ease from the first consultation. During my IPL sessions, Jodie marked up the areas and avoided any moles or damaged skin, then preps using the cooler handle before a light shot. The light shot itself really doesn’t hurt, it’s done in seconds. The fact the skin is cooled first makes this an easy process to tolerate. I genuinely didn’t feel in pain at all and Jodie applied a lovely aloe balm to soothe the skin straight away. If anything I felt my appointments were more of a therapy as I knew I would be hair free come my holiday. After each session I came away feeling the progress getting better and better and by week 5 there was hardly any hair growth. I didn’t feel the need to shave anymore. I felt more confident and there is much less maintenance at home now which means I have more time for other things. I would highly recommend IPL hair removal by SkinBase and with Jodie as she made me feel at ease from the moment I asked about it and the difference it makes is life changing for someone who wasn’t so confident in her skin. I can’t wait for Summer and my holiday. Thanks Jodie & SkinBase.”
