Prevent Signs of Ageing Skin

SPF

Sun exposure is one of the biggest reasons that signs of ageing appear prematurely on the skin. To prevent signs of ageing skin, you must stay protected daily with SPF, regardless of the weather. A broad spectrum SPF 30+ is a key defence in keeping the skin healthy, and keeping fine lines and wrinkles away. Ensure you are using the correct amount of SPF and reapplying as frequently as necessary. UVA rays, those responsible for ageing, can even penetrate the skin through glass. If you are inside at work or driving in your car – you are not protected from the sun without SPF!

Protective Clothing

As well as SPF, protective clothing is a fantastic way to shield the skin from the damaging UV rays. Long sleeves and a sun hat are a great way to safely get out in the sun. As well as protecting from the sun, sunglasses are also a great preventative tool to minimise wrinkles caused by squinting in the sunshine. If you are trying to prevent signs of ageing skin, stay aware of the multitude of ways your external environment could be contributing with our blog.

No Smoking

Smoking can have many detrimental effects on the skin. If you are serious about preventing signs of ageing skin and you are a smoker, you need to quit. Find out how smoking affects your skin here. Many people find the appearance of their skin improves after quitting. Increased blood flow allows greater oxygen and nutrients to reach the skin, for a healthier glow. Collagen and elastin will also begin to renew, to minimise future fine lines and wrinkles.

Healthy Diet

A healthy, balanced diet is thought to be key in the quest to prevent signs of ageing skin. You are what you eat – and the nutrition you put into your body provides the building blocks for your skin. Foods high in antioxidants, vitamins, fibre and protein will help to promote youthful skin, and do not cause damage the way that some sugars and processed foods do.

Hydration

As well as nutritious food, staying hydrated and drinking lots of water is a great way to minimise wrinkles and other signs of ageing for as long as possible.

Sleep

Getting the right amount of sleep that your skin needs is a vital aspect of keeping your youthful glow. During periods of deep sleep throughout the night, your skin takes the opportunity to repair and heal damaged cells. If you do not get this opportunity, you will speed up the ageing process of the skin, and visible signs will be apparent.

De-Stress

If you are frequently stressed, you will have high levels of cortisol, the stress hormone, within your body. Prolonged stressful periods can prematurely age the skin, as cortisol breaks down the collagen needed for skin to remain firm and smooth. Activities such as meditation and yoga work well to minimise stress, so you can prevent signs of ageing skin.

Consistency is Key

These factors each contribute to maintaining youthful skin, and must be combined for the most successful results. Following one or two and ignoring the rest of the recommendations is not enough to prevent signs of ageing skin.
