Facial redness can be bothersome. It can affect your confidence – and if it makes you feel embarrassed, skin can appear even redder. This then becomes a vicious cycle.

Chronic redness is inflammation which causes tiny blood vessels to dilate and push against the skin. More blood rushes to your skin causing redness.

Redness can appear because of a skin condition like rosacea – but it is not always the case. The good news is you can combat facial redness, whatever the cause.

Why is Your Skin Red?

Identifying the cause of facial redness is key to calming it. It can indicate an underlying health condition, or just be environmental stressors. Redness can happen in cold windy weather and dry indoor heat, and other triggers could be:

  • Inflammation – from acne or sun exposure
  • Skincare – ingredient reaction/dryness/over-exfoliation
  • Consumption – alcohol/spicy foods

Sometimes redness can environmental and making simple changes to your diet may help. Focus on an anti-inflammatory diet full of leafy green vegetables, fish and essential oils. Vitamin D supplements can also help. Avoid obvious food triggers like spicy foods, tomato, chocolate and cinnamon.

How to Calm the Skin

  • Gentle cooling. Use a cold compress or have a cool shower/bath. The soothing temperature will minimise redness by acting as an anti-inflammatory. For prevention in the future, avoid hot water when washing and always check your skincare routine and ingredients.
  • Skincare routine. Use moisturising products with antioxidants and focus on hydration. Opt for soothing and natural ingredients because they are best.
  • Identify triggers and avoid alcohol and spicy foods – or whatever you identify as a cause. It may be worth keeping a food diary.

Facial redness can appear at any time. Focus on finding out the cause so you can treat it in the right way.
