How Much Skincare Product Do I Need?

It can be difficult to understand the best level of skincare product to slather onto skin. Are you a ‘less is more’ person? Or do you prefer to lather a thick layer onto your skin?  Either way, bear in mind the amount of skincare product you use could be contributing to any skincare woes you have.

Using too much product is wasteful. Using too little could leave you unprotected from the elements.

Cleanser

A single pump (or a 20p sized blob) is the recommended amount of cleanser for your face. In the evening, instead of using more to wipe the day off of your face, cleanse properly with one portion, then repeat the process.

Moisturiser

Depending on your skin type and skin concerns, it is best to use between a pea-sized blob and a heaped teaspoon of moisturiser each day. The aim is to have a thin layer of coverage across the face – not a thick, pore-clogging layer.

SPF

A shot glass amount of SPF should be applied all over the face and body every two hours. For the face and neck, this is roughly a teaspoon amount. Don’t forget regular reapplication to stay protected.

Eye Cream

It is important to distinguish between your face cream and eye cream. For the sensitive area of skin under, above and around the eyes, it is also important not to overload. A blob the size of a grain of rice is perfect for each eye.

Toner

Toner is often applied with a cotton pad which can affect how much product you use. It is tricky to know how much the cotton wool absorbs. To get around this, squirt 4-5 drops of toner into the palm of your hand – and dab it onto your skin with the other.

Ultimately go with your gut instinct when it comes to how much skincare product to use. Follow our guidelines and you should feel whether there is excess or a shortage – then adjust!
