Proper exfoliation is really good for our skin, but how often should we be doing it? You may already be cleansing, moisturising, and slathering on the SPF, but if you’re not exfoliating regularly, your skin won’t be as healthy as it could be. But what exactly is exfoliation?

Exfoliation is essentially the removal of the dead skin cells on the skin’s surface. It can be done by physical abrasion; microdermabrasion and scrubs are examples or chemical exfoliation including scrubs that contain special kinds of acids that dissolve and remove the dead skin cells without scrubbing at the skin.

Why is Exfoliation Important?

As we get older, unfortunately, the process of cell regeneration slows down. This means that the body doesn’t generate as many new skin cells as it once did. When old skin cells start to pile up on the surface of the skin, it can leave skin looking dull, rough, and dry. What’s more, is that the build-up of dead skin cells can result in excess oil and clogged pores which in turn leads to blemishes and acne.

However, this doesn’t need to be the case as proper exfoliation removes the barrier of dead skin cells that are clogging the skin and uncovers fresh new cells below. This opens the way for moisturising products to penetrate more deeply into the skin, which makes them more effective in nourishing the skin. A regular exfoliating routine will leave your skin looking fresh and healthy.

Healthy, Glowing Skin

If you want healthy, glowing skin then regular exfoliation is essential. However, avoid over-exfoliating and limit your exfoliation routine to once a week, a course of microdermabrasion is great for the skin carried out every 7-10 days. Over-exfoliating can leave your skin dry, irritated, and damaged. Taking good care of your skin will not only will you shine but your skin will look younger!

Microdermabrasion

During a microdermabrasion treatment, a fine jet of abrasive crystals gently removes dead skin cells layer by layer and a vacuum action lifts away the debris, stimulating the blood flow and encouraging collagen and elastin formation. In as little as 30 minutes a microdermabrasion facial will firm up, revitalise and leave you with more youthful-looking skin. During a course of treatments, wrinkles and fine lines will disappear, acne and acne scarring will be significantly reduced and dull and tired skin will be restored to glowing health.
