What is Sagging Skin?
Sagging skin describes skin that has lost its elasticity and firmness, resulting in a loose, less taut appearance. Sagging skin creates wrinkles or folds, commonly on the face, neck, arms, and abdomen. It is often accompanied by fine lines and creases, which can contribute to a tired or aged appearance.
Causes of Sagging Skin
There are several causes of sagging skin, including:
Ageing
As we age, our skin loses collagen and elastin, the two proteins that give our skin its firmness. This leads to a loss of skin tone and elasticity, making us more prone to sagging and laxity.
Dehydration
When the body is dehydrated, the skin can become dry and lose its elasticity, which leads to sagging skin. Dehydration is one of the causes of sagging skin, as without moisture it cannot remain plump and bounce back where necessary.
Sun Damage
As well as a gradual loss of collagen and elastin fibres, they can also be damaged by exposure to UV rays. The excess sun exposure results in premature ageing and sagging skin. It’s important to protect your skin from the sun by wearing sunscreen everyday, covering up in protective clothing, and avoiding the sun when it is at its strongest.
Weight Loss
Losing a significant amount of weight is one of the causes of sagging skin, particularly if the weight loss happens quickly. The excess skin sags as it has been stretched out for a prolonged period of time. This is particularly common on the arms, thighs, and abdomen.
Smoking
Smoking accelerates the ageing process by damaging collagen and elastin fibres within the skin, increasing skin laxity. Smokers are also more likely to suffer from sagging skin, across their body as well as their faces, as nicotine restricts blood flow leading to reduced oxygen to cells and an aged appearance.
Poor Nutrition
A diet that is high in processed foods and low in nutrients can contribute to sagging skin. The body needs certain vitamins and minerals to produce collagen and elastin fibres. They do not get them from junk food.
Genetics
Some people are simply more prone to sagging skin than others due to their genetics. If your parents or other family members have sagging skin, you may be predisposed to develop it as well. Genetics is one of the more unpreventable causes of sagging skin.
Why Does Skin Sag
It is clear there are lots of potential causes of sagging skin. Some causes are preventable and some are not. While ageing is the most common cause, dehydration, sun damage, weight loss, smoking, poor nutrition and genetics can all contribute to sagging skin.
