Can microdermabrasion get rid of blackheads?

Our skin is covered in tiny little holes called pores. Most of the time, you can’t see them, although it’s common for the pores on the nose, forehead and cheeks to be large enough to see. Our pores are important because at the base of every pore is a hair follicle, which body hair grows from. Pores also secrete oil and sweat, to keep our skin healthy and protected. Unfortunately, the oil in our pores has a tendency to get stuck, and this, in turn, traps dead skin cells that would otherwise naturally flake away. This mixture becomes trapped and compacted in the pore, and forms a solid mass known as a ‘comedone’. The top part of this comedone is exposed to the air so it oxidises, which makes it turn black, leading to the nickname ‘blackhead’. How does Microdermabrasion get rid of blackheads? How does Microdermabrasion get rid of blackheads?

During a Microdermabrasion facial, gentle abrasive crystals are passed over the skin in a fine jet. This loosens dead skin and removes the top part of the blackhead. As you go back for more treatments, the blackheads will gradually be removed. It will also remove the dead skin and excess oil that causes them in the first place.
In addition, Microdermabrasion speeds up cell renewal, which means that your skin will ‘slough’ more quickly and efficiently. Therefore blackheads are far less likely to form. So it’s a combination of deep pore cleansing, exfoliation, and rejuvenation of your skin’s renewal processes, which makes Microdermabrasion so effective for removing blackheads from the skin on your face.

How can I prevent blackheads from coming back?

There are many things you can do at home to help prevent blackheads from returning after your microdermabrasion treatments. The first is to make sure you cleanse your skin before bed, every single night, no matter how tired you are. A night spent sleeping in makeup is a night spent creating blackheads!
The second tip is to exfoliate with a gentle but effective product twice a week. Thirdly, make sure you use skincare products that are adapted to your skin type, and choose makeup that is non-comedogenic (meaning that it’s been formulated not to sit in the pores). Lastly, you can book maintenance Microdermabrasion sessions, to make sure your complexion stays clear and blackhead-free.
