Are you Moisturising Incorrectly?

If you apply moisturiser everyday but still struggle to keep your skin hydrated, you might be moisturising incorrectly.

If you apply moisturiser everyday but still struggle to keep your skin hydrated, you might be moisturising incorrectly. The weather, your diet and your skincare routine all play a part in well-moisturised skin. Moisturising is one of the most essential steps in skincare and it’s important to do it right.

Moisturising protects the top layer of skin, the stratum corneum. Keeping this layer hydrated makes it function well. This layer protects your skin from inflammation and irritants. It is important to choose the right moisturiser for your skin type and apply it correctly.

Stop Moisturising Incorrectly

Top Tips:

  • For healthy glowing skin, always apply moisturiser on damp – not dry – skin. Damp skin is better able to lock in moisture.
  • Pat the skin dry. Rubbing it dry can dry out the skin and this is the opposite of what you want to achieve.
  • Apply immediately after cleansing to avoid post-wash dry-out. Always stroke upwards into the skin for best absorption.
  • Don’t use harsh cleansing products. These strip the skin of its natural oils and causes it to dry out.
  • Don’t forget the driest areas. Lips, hands, elbows, knees, feet all need extra moisture.
  • Moisturise before bed. Applying moisturiser before bed allows the skin to heal while sleeping.
  • Treat your neck as you do your face. It gets just as much UV exposure and a wrinkly neck is a classic tell-tale sign of ageing skin. Always remember the moisturiser and SPF.
  • Stay hydrated from within – drink plenty of water throughout the day. Eating a variety of fruit and vegetables also helps to hydrate from within.

Moisturising incorrectly can lead to a host of issues like dryness and breakouts. Hydration is arguably the most important step for skin because, it helps to seal your skin barrier. Never forget the power of moisturising. Always choose a product and routine that suits your skin type.
