Typically it is a skin condition where pimples, cysts and clogged pores appear on the skin. Acne can be painful but is often more emotionally distressing – and can affect self-esteem.  It is caused by 3 main factors: over-production of oil in the skin, inflammation and a build-up of bacteria in the hair follicles.

Summer is often a difficult time for acne sufferers because the condition can be aggravated due to sweat and oil. The good news is there are several effective treatments. It can be a bit of trial and error as everyone’s skin is different.

Treatment Options

  • Switch out heavier skincare products and use a foaming cleanser to wash your face both morning and night. Foam is better at penetrating deep into pores, which helps to remove excess oil, sweat and debris.
  • Avoid touching your face. Popping pimples and fiddling with skin will aggravate it and only add more bacteria to your face.
  • Limit the amount of products you use on your face. Read ingredients carefully and avoid oil-based products. Switch to a combined moisturiser/SPF.
  • Don’t use thick makeup products and clean brushes regularly.
  • Stay hydrated. Drink plenty of water. You sweat it out more quickly during the summer months so stay replenished. Carry a reusable water bottle with you at all times.
  • Don’t forget – if your skincare ends at your chin you’re doing it wrong. Think about your whole body. The last thing you want to deal with is acne on your chest or back. Make sure you cover these areas too!
