What is IPL?
Intense Pulsed Light Therapy is a cosmetic skin treatment that is also effective at removing unwanted hair. Specific wavelengths of light provide a range of aesthetic and therapeutic treatments. A handheld device targets multiple wavelengths of light onto your skin. For hair removal, IPL uses the light to heat your hair follicles and prevent the hair from regrowing. The root absorbs gentle pulses of light which destroy the follicle. With only 6 sessions of IPL, 70% of hair growth can be prevented permanently.
What can IPL treat?
IPL is multi-purpose and the light rays can also treat a range of skin concerns including:
- Scarring
- Ageing
- Pigmentation
- Spider veins
This therapy targets structures within the skin (melanin, blood, collagen). IPL breaks them down and improves the skin’s appearance. IPL also stimulates the production of collagen at a deeper level. This plumps the skin and improves fine lines and pigmentation. IPL effectively treats acne.
Two reasons it’s a good time for hair removal
- Avoid sun exposure. It takes time to get rid of unwanted hair and needs to be performed when the skin is pale. If you decide you want IPL to rid you of unwanted hair just as summer is arriving, you will be too late. You won’t be able to avoid sun exposure which is recommended for light treatments. Direct sunlight can result in hyper/hypopigmentation or other skin damage.
- Fit all treatments in by next summer. IPL treatments have to be spaced apart. You can have one treatment every four to six weeks. A full treatment course may include 6-10 treatments. By planning ahead and starting early you will be hair-free by summer.
