I am a huge fan of home facials, especially when I am a little strapped for cash. But if you’re not sure how to make it feel as relaxing and effective as a spa facial, then you have come to the right place! Read on for some tips that will help you to get it just right.

First, think about your skin type

This is pretty important no matter what skincare procedure you do. Before you start your home facial, think about whether you have oily, normal or dry skin so you can choose the right products that let you get the most out of home facials. Look for cleansers, toners, creams and lotions that work for your skin type and you’re all set.

Make homemade facial masks

Not only is it fun but making your own homemade facial masks also enables you to control what goes on your face. There are so many homemade facial ingredients to choose from that you can literally mix and match to find the perfect combination for your skin. Oatmeal, for example, is perfect for dry skin, while honey can draw impurities out of any skin type.

Use a circular motion when cleaning

First, you need to thoroughly cleanse your face to help to remove all the make-up, dirt and debris that is present on your skin. In a circular motion, gently scrub your skin but don’t be too rough or you risk damaging your skin. The neck mustn’t be forgotten either.

A huge part of getting a good facial is exfoliating. Use a simple scrub of olive oil and sugar to help remove dirt and debris from your pores, leaving you with a clean slate to work your magic on. Make sure you rinse well afterwards so your face isn’t covered in oil, which can get in the way of the rest of the treatment.

Give your facemask time to penetrate the skin

We’ve all been guilty of putting a facemask on and washing it off two minutes later but the best way to make sure you’re getting the most out of your facial is to let the mask penetrate your skin for a decent amount of time. Apply it just before you settle on the couch to watch television or read a book. Generally, 15 to 30 minutes is ideal, so plan accordingly.

One of the best things about getting a professional facial is the warm towel that they gently place on your face at the end, I find it so relaxing! You can easily replicate this at home. Start by gently steaming your face a few inches above a bowl of steaming water for a couple of minutes. Then wet a towel with warm water and gently wrap it around your face while you lie down, leaving a spot to breathe. And relax!
