Having clear skin can make a world of difference to our confidence and caring for it is actually simpler than you might think. In this blog, we will explore the importance of establishing a daily beauty routine to help keep skin clean, protected and looking its best at all times.

Step 1 – Cleanse

First and foremost, the single most important thing you can do for your skin when it comes to establishing a beauty routine is to cleanse it properly. Poor cleansing can lead to the build up of excess oils, make up and dead skin cells which can clog pores, causing blackheads, pimples and a dull looking complexion.

You can choose from a range of cleansers to suit your skin type and preference, including rinse off formulas or ones that are removed with cotton wool pads.

There are formulas to suit all skin types, but as a general guide, if you have combination skin, or one that can be prone to being oily, try a gel or foaming cleanser. For sensitive and dry skin types, a creamier texture will be just the ticket. Soap should be avoided at all costs as it strips the skin of moisture and does not do an effective job of removing makeup.

If you prefer using cotton pads to cleanse your face, then it’s best to opt for a milk or lotion for combination/oily skin or a milk or cream for dry and sensitive skin types.

Always bear in mind that your skin should never feel uncomfortable or tight after cleansing, instead it should feel clean and fresh. If it does feel not right, it’s likely you are using the wrong cleanser and you need to swap your current one for one that is more hydrating. Likewise, if you find that your skin still feels greasy after you have finished cleansing, try something that is more deep cleansing to combat this.

Step 2 – Tone

Using a toner as part of your beauty regime has a range of benefits, including that it removes any makeup or debris missed by the cleansing stage. Toners can also provide further balance to oily skins or hydration and comfort if dry or sensitive. After toning, you should find that your skin feels fresh, clean and ready for the next step. And in the warmer months, toner is perfect for helping to keep the skin cool and refreshed.

Be careful what type of toner you choose as choosing the wrong one can leave skin feeling tight and uncomfortable. Only use astringents if your skin is very oily as they strip the skin of moisture and can cause severe dehydration. As a consequence, the skin goes into over-drive and over-compensates by producing even more oil. This leads to further problems, the skin cant breathe and typically under surface congestion occurs.

Step 3 – Moisturise

If you want radiant skin that is soft and supple, then it is very important that you moisturise daily. Choose light weight/oil free /water based formulas for normal to combination/oily skins and richer cream for dryer/sensitive types. Also aim to choose one which has an inbuilt SPF to protect your skin against the sun’s harmful rays, and help to prevent premature ageing.
