We love a good smoothie, and there are so many different ways you can make them pack a punch to support beautiful, healthy skin. Here are some of our favourite smoothie ingredients to promote a fresh, blemish free complexion!

Kiwi

Rich in both vitamin C and vitamin E, the humble kiwi is an underappreciated fruit for its fantastic health and skin benefits. Add one to a smoothie for a flavourful kick, and to support healing, collagen production, and your immune system.

Ginger

Antioxidants are the key to anti-ageing, and ginger is a potent source of several age-fighting compounds – in fact, ginger contains over 40 different antioxidants! Add an inch to your smoothies for a delicious kick that will help to improve all around wellbeing, as well as support the healthy function of your skin.

Avocado

Being rich in vitamin E means that avocados are ideal for supporting your skin’s healing processes. But avocados have another hidden benefit – they are rich in an antioxidant called glutathione, which helps to prevent hyperpigmentation and melasma.

Spinach

You either love or hate this green, leafy superfood. However, it’s the perfect addition to a smoothie as it is rich in B vitamins. This family of vitamins is essential for healthy skin, as they promote regular production of sebum, and support the skin’s natural sun protection.

Maca

This Peruvian root has enjoyed a real buzz around it recently – the powder is rich in all kinds of nutrients including iron, calcium, magnesium, potassium and B vitamins. Maca is thought to help regulate blood pressure and reduce depression. It is also believed to help strengthen the skin, and protect it from the ageing process.

Turmeric

A powerful anti-inflammatory, turmeric is ideal for anyone suffering from blemishes and spots, and it also supports a healthy digestive system.

Cinnamon

Rich in antioxidants that fight free radical damage and inflammation, cinnamon helps to keep the skin looking young, firm and clear. But cinnamon also helps to regulate blood sugar – adding a pinch to your morning smoothie will therefore help to keep sweet cravings and energy crashes at bay, making it easier to maintain a healthy diet.

Recipes

These powerful ingredients are fantastic for supporting the health of your skin and body. But how should you use them? Here are a couple of recipes to get you started.

Green Power Smoothie

  • 1 Kiwi
  • Inch of ginger
  • ½ Avocado
  • Handful of spinach
  • 4 ice cubes

Combine all ingredients in a blender, and blend until smooth. Pour into a glass and sprinkle powdered ginger on top, if desired.

Super Boost Smoothie

1 Large frozen banana

1 Teaspoon cinnamon

½ Teaspoon turmeric

1 Tablespoon maca root powder

100ml Plant milk

Squeeze of honey or agave nectar (optional)

Add banana and plant milk to a blender, and blend until banana is partially pulverised. Next add cinnamon, turmeric and maca, and then blend until completely smooth. Try a bit more milk if a thinner consistency is desired. Add sweetener to taste, then pour into a glass.
