Time to take control of the effects of stress on your skin…

It may be a shock to you that the skin is the largest organ in the body. So therefore it’s not really a surprise that our skin easily shows any sign of stress whether it be working too hard, tiredness, anxiety or too much partying –  the result is our skin will be dry, dull and suffer breakouts of acne and an uneven skin tone.

Did you know that the skin is the largest organ in the body? That’s right and it has some pretty important functions too. Therefore, it’s not really a surprise that our skin easily shows any sign of stress whether it be working too hard, tiredness, anxiety or too much partying (okay probably not that much partying this year!) –  the result is our skin will be dry, dull and suffer from breakouts of acne and  uneven skin tone.

Here are some tips to stop stress from affecting your skin…

1) Zzz  Zzz Zzz

Sleep. Sleep, Sleep. You cannot get enough of this natural wonder drug when it comes to preventing stress from affecting your skin – beauty sleep is called beauty sleep for a reason you know! The body repairs itself while we’re asleep, so… it’s time to take control of your sleep and make sure you are getting the recommended 7-8 hours a night whenever possible.  If you feeling groggy during that day it might just be that you’ve got a sleep deficit going on so taking yourself off to bed at 9pm occasionally to catch up is well worth it for your body’s wellbeing.

2) Relax

We know we know, it’s easier said than done. And if you’re a parent it almost seems as if there is always something to worry about but seriously… time for relaxation should always be a priority, no matter how busy or stressed you are. This will help protect your skin from the harmful effects of stress. Even just finding a quiet place to close your eyes for a few minutes, slowing your breathing down will make a difference. Try to decide if what you are stressing or worrying about is even that important. And if it is? Then take steps to solve the issue and release yourself from the stress of worrying.

3) Nutrition SOS

Stressed = chocolate, carbs and sugary snacks. Sound familiar? But this won’t help your skin at all. In fact, bad nutrition will lead to breakouts and an uneven skin tone. Instead, aim to eat a balanced diet, with oily fish such as salmon, lean proteins, whole grains, fruit and vegetables – try to cut down on sugary and fat laden foods. Write a weekly menu to try and plan out what you will eat so you are not just grabbing on the go and have mealtimes thought out. To relieve some stress, pick some dishes you can chuck in a slow cooker in the morning or try and make extra when you do cook so you can have some portions ready in the freezer for when you are short on time.

5) Have regular YOU time

It sounds a bit cliche now saying ‘You’ time but having said that, having time for ourselves is so important. It can be difficult to fit in (and laiden with a certain amount of guilt) especially if we have busy careers or a family (or both). Try and fit in some time to look after yourself and put yourself first, whether that be a bit of pampering or spending time with a close friend over a cuppa. It will pay dividends, as you’ll feel more relaxed and your poor skin will feel less stressed as a result. You deserve it! Why not book a SkinBase treatment?
