DRINK UP!

And no, we’re not referring to drinks of the alcoholic kind, although that may be more likely with Christmas party season coming up! It’s known that we tend to feel less thirsty in the winter months, but it’s crucial to keep ourselves – and skin – hydrated, inside and out. In addition to drinking plenty of water, herbal teas, diluted sugar free fruit drinks and clear soups are more creative ways to get your daily H2O and flush out toxins.

DON’T SKIMP ON SPF

It may be cold outside but that doesn’t mean that you can stop using sun protection. With fewer hours of sunlight, UV rays are still potent in the winter months. A moisturiser with an SPF 15 is recommended on a daily basis.

REACH FOR THE MISTLETOE

You’ll need to make sure your lips are in tip-top condition for any mistletoe action this party season but you’ll be less likely to pucker up if you’re feeling self-conscious about a dry, flaky pout. Try an exfoliant on lips to get rid of flaky patches, fight the temptation to constantly lick your lips (it only dries them out more) and choose a moisturising, natural lip balm (avoid ingredients like camphor and menthol, which tend to worsen a cracked, inflamed mouth).

FEED YOUR SKIN

Certain foods can help your skin glow from the inside out, especially foods such as oily fish like salmon and tuna (high in omega-3 which help plump up skin’s collagen production), spinach and avocadoes (high in vitamin E, which protects skin from UV rays and cell damage) and vitamin C-rich foods like tomatoes and citrus fruits (they’ll help stave off wrinkles). Sugar won’t be doing any favours for sallow winter skin, so get snacking on seeds and nuts for a zinc boost, essential for preventing rashes and unwanted skin irritations.

DON’T HAVE ONE TOO MANY

The festive season may be the time for drinking and making merry, with plenty of delicious hot and cold Christmas-themed tipples on offer, but your skin won’t thank you for it. Since alcohol and caffeine can dehydrate skin, limit your alcohol, coffee and fizzy drink consumption in the colder months… and think how lovely you’ll feel waking up after your office party without a hangover.
